Self-Breast Examination |
 |
|
By Michael Hueneke, M.D. |
The most important detection method for breast cancer is self exam.
Many times women are seen by different physicians throughout their
lives and these doctors examine thousands of women. As a woman, you
will know your body the best. Most breast cancers are found by women
on self breast exam. Early detection is the key to a good prognosis.
Women should examine their breasts each month. Usually the beginning
of a woman's menstrual period is a good reminder. If you are no
longer having menstruation, the first day of each month works well.
The following are some guidelines for breast exam. Stand in front of
a mirror and look at the shape and contour of both breasts with your
arms over your head, at your sides, and on your hips. Take note of
any skin changes such a dimpling, wrinkling, tight areas, change in
nipple position, or irritated skin. Then feel each breast one at a
time. There are several ways to do this and none are superior to
another. I recommend to women to use a circular or spiral method
starting at the nipple and progressively working outwardly. It is
also important to feel the armpit as the breast tissue extends into
this area and the armpit also contains lymph nodes. After you have
completed on side move on to the other breast. Most women will feel
some lumpiness or unevenness to their breasts. It is extremely
important to detect any changes in the breast tissue. Should you
notice any irregularities in your breast, contact your doctor for a
timely appointment. |
